Presentation of the module

This compulsory module consists of a theoretical part and a practical one with a higher weight of the practical part in the assessment offering to students the basis for the image processing.

In this one the characteristics of the systems, sensors and images, metadata, generic formats and remote sensing products, as well as imaging techniques such as composition, colour, contrast adjustments, filters and techniques for image restoration are explained. Methods for geometric, radiometric and atmospheric correction are presented, by distinguishing the methods for correction of the latter depending on the spectral region, as well as the correction of topographic effects in the optical field. It also explains the techniques for microwaves by distinguishing them between passive radiometers and radar.

It also presents some statistical treatments for images, such as the analysis of spatial continuity with variograms and the kriging and cokriging techniques.

Practices are currently taught with the commercial software ENVI, the Matlab programming language and the S-GeMS free software, plus ESA Toolboxes.
