The Mystery Play of Elche is a cultural treasure of the city of Elche and one of the most precious jewels of the Valencian heritage. It was declared a National Monument in 1931 and also included in the First Proclamation of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The origins of the Mystery of Elche haven't been traced back accurately due to the lack of documentation. There are two local traditions on its birth. One links the creation of La Festa with the conquest of Elche, occupied by the Moors, at the hands of the Aragonese troops of James I of Aragon in 1265. Another legendary tradition gives a religious explanation and relates it to the apparition or coming of the Virgin on 29 December 1370.

La Festa is performed in August every year in the in the Basilica of Saint Mary of Elche to commemorate the Assumption of Mary.
