Biography | ||
I completed my chemistry degree from University of Valencia in 1999. Then, I moved to the University of Girona to work on the synthesis (in solution and solid phase) of heterocycle libraries, as a fellow of the agreement between the University and the pharmaceutical company Janssen Cilag S.A., under the supervision of Professor Jose Manuel Villalgordo. In November 2001, I got a fellowship from the Generalitat Valenciana to perform my doctoral thesis at the University Jaume I (UJI) of Castellón, working on asymmetric synthesis of natural products and development of synthetic methodologies (specifically aldol reactions with double asymmetric induction), under the supervision of Professors J. Alberto Marco and Miguel Carda. After the completion of my PhD I was granted a fellowship of continuity of the University Jaume I, followed by two postdoctoral research contracts in March 2006 and the year 2010, to continue my research in the group of Professors Marco and Carda. Firstly I finished the study about the aldol additions with double asymmetric induction, but later the research was evolving from synthesis of natural products to medicinal chemistry (specifically searching for improved antimitotics). During this tenure I had a chance to visit several other laboratories for research experience and exchange. In late 2007 I made a postdoctoral stay of 4 months in the group of Professor M.C. Willis at the University of Oxford (in the Chemistry Research Laboratory), working on the development and application of enantioselective Suzuki couplings to the synthesis of natural products. In the years 2012-2013 I made several stays at the Center for Biological Research (CIB-CSIC), in Madrid, with Dr. Fernando Díaz to study interactions with tubulin and cytotoxic activities of synthetic products prepared within the collaboration that was taking place between UJI and CIB. At the end of 2013 I started a new line of research in supramolecular organic chemistry, focused on the study of peptide derived molecular hydrogels for applications in catalysis, nanotechnology and biomedicine, with Professors J.F. Miravet and B. Escuder. At the beginning of 2014 I got the accreditation to University Associate Professor (Profesor Titular de Universidad) of the national agency of quality and accreditation evaluation (ANECA), but at that time I had difficulties to find a stable position in organic chemistry. For this reason, in September 2016 I moved to the Education Department of the University Jaume I as Assistant Professor (Profesor Ayudante Doctor), to focus on the didactics of experimental sciences. Fortunately, in September 2019 I got a new position as Assistant Professor (Profesor Ayudante Doctor) in the Department of Organic Chemistry of the University of Valencia (UV), and one year later I promoted to Associate Professor (Profesor Titular de Universidad). Since then, I have been working with Professor C. del Pozo in asymmetric synthesis using tandem processes to obtain compounds of pharmacological interest. |

I graduated in BSc in Chemistry (2010) and in MSc in Org. Chemistry (2012), both from UV and obtaining Extraordinary Awards. During my BSc, I carried out a 9-months stay in the laboratory of Prof. D. Craig at Imperial College (UK). In 2011, I was awarded an “Atracció de Talent” grant for my PhD, which I conducted at UV (Prof. J. R. Pedro / I. Fernández) working on enantioselective methods for the addition of hydroxyarenes using bifunctional organocatalysis. My PhD was awarded the Extraordinary Award, and I was finalist in the Lilly Awards. During this period, I conducted a 6-months stay in the group of Prof. G. Fu, at Caltech (2013, USA). After the PhD, I moved to Stockholm University (April 2016), where I worked under the supervision of Dr. A. Mendoza on kinetic analysis, [3+2] cycloadditions and redox-active diazo compounds. During this period, I was awarded a Wenner-Gren Foundation grant, and a Generalitat-Valenciana Fellowship, which allowed me to go back to UV for a few months, conducting research, mentoring and teaching activities. In October 2019, I joined the Prof. A. Echavarren group at ICIQ first as a postdoctoral researcher and then as JdlC-Incorporación (2020). I worked on the preparation of chiral ligands for enantioselective gold-catalysis, C-H activation and the generation of carbenes by retro-Buchner reactions. I also investigated on the design and synthesis of gold complexes for targeted intracellular applications, in collaboration with José Alberto López, from Prof. M. Serrano Group at IRB Barcelona. Our project was awarded by the “Ignite Program” by the BIST. After a brief period (March-October 2022) as Assistant Professor at the Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Department at Universidad de Alcalá, I finally came back to UV, where I was appointed Assistant Professor at the Organic Chemistry Department. |

OLMOS VERGE, ANDREA |
Biography | |||
I obtained my Doctoral Thesis in 2009 in the area of Organic Chemistry, more specifically in the study of oxidation reactions with supported reagents under continuous flow conditions in supercritical carbon dioxide, in the University of Valencia. I moved to Patrick Pale's group in the University of Strasbourg. During this period I worked on the development of organic reactions catalyzed by zeolites doped with transition metals. In 2012 I moved to the University of Huelva first as a juan de la Cierva researcher and later as IP of a Young Researchers Project JIN at Pedro J. Pérez's group. The main objective during this period was the functionalization of non-activated C-H bonds through carbene insertion reactions. I took part in the development of new catalysts for the derivatization of methane and other light alkanes in supercritical CO2, the design and synthesis of new ligands for the selective activation of primary C-H bonds, mechanistic studies and chiral catalysis. Since January 2019 I work at the university of Valencia as a Ramón y Cajal independent researcher and Group Leader of the group New Challenges in Homogeneous Metal Catalysis (HOMCAT). This group is funded by a MICINN and GVA Research Projects apart from the RYC dotation. The group is centered on the development of new catalysts for the depolymerization reaction of polyethylene, an environmental challenge, and the transformation of unsaturated C-C bonds into value-added products and the generation of molecular complexity under mild and sustainable conditions. Seminar results have been disseminated through publications in Q1 and oral presentations in national and international conferences. Since 2019, AO has supervised 2 Erasmus+ trainees, 5 TFG and 5 TFM, 3 of the later students have incorporated the research group to develop their Doctoral Theses. Other activities: member of the RSEQ-STVAL government board since May 2021; member of the jury of Reacciona! contest years; member of the organizing committee of the National Chemistry Olimpics years 2020 and 2023. |
