During the years following World War II, the United States experienced an unprecedented period of economic and demographic expansion. Since the 50s, the standard of living of families grew unstoppably: America shows off its supremacy. Americans reached welfare levels which had been unimaginable a few years earlier. That prosperity, present in North American everyday life, was also seen in the media. Satisfaction and achievement appeared on the cover pages. There were also ostentatious displays of wealth and prosperity. But this material joy also conceals or covers some discomforts that not everyone notices. One of them is that of the American youth: restless youngsters whose uneasiness can be seen and who are seen with uneasiness. They often expressed their dissatisfaction with attitudes of rejection, to their elders' dismay. They seemed to despise their inheritance, the adult world or the prosperity they benefitted from. Covers aims to show the roots of this opposition and rebellion, of the wish to live and to die young. With movie clips, album covers, songs, photographs and literary works, Covers will uncover the identity of those pioneers, their values, what took them to the cover pages, what was covered: what covers reveal and conceal.
