The University of Valencia and its natural environments: the Carrascal de la Font Roja and Serra de Mariola. From 2 to 24 May in the "Eduard Boscà" Library

The University of Valencia, through Office of the Vice-Principal for Territorial Projection and Participation shows us various physical and biotic aspects with the exhibition about the Carrascal de la Font Roja and Serra de Mariola combined with other historical, ethnological and archaeological characteristics. The centuries-long merging of the two has created some cultural landscapes of extraordinary value, which, for some years, have been protected by the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencia Regional Government) which declared them natural parks.

The Carrascal and Mariola, as Aitana or Serrella, have not been untouched nature for many centuries, so it is always possible to notice the human presence: dry stone pens, the sites where charcoal was processed, diggings... and more modern transmission towers.

The progress, from the Neolithic period, that marked the beginning of deforestation of native forest in the mountains of Valencia, but the increasing use of hydrocarbons like fuel and farming in regression have made have caused the forest to progress again in our country during the past half century. The holm oak and pine forests of the Font Roja and Mariola constitute one of the most notable extensions of forest in Valencia, despite being in a densely populated area of over 80,000 inhabitants in the urban area that follows the axis of the upper course of the river Serpis (Alcoy, Cocentaina, Muro, etc.). The Mediterranean deciduous forest located at the foot of Menejador or in the shaded areas of Mariola is excepcionally valuable because it´s a type of biome that centuries ago was much more prevalent throughout our country.
