The “First Scientific Conference on Research on Stress and Health: vulnerability and resistance” will be held on 1 and 2 March as part of the activities of the Prometeo 2011-048 Group of Excellence in the Saló de Graus of the Faculty of Psychology.
The Conference will be opened by the Dean of the centre, Prof. José Ramos and the group’s main researcher, Prof. Alicia Salvador Fdez-Montejo. Then there will be a talk and discussion about the group’s different studies and lines of research. Presentations will include results from different research approaches in healthy subjects and subjects with chronic stress, as well as in animal models. Researchers from other universities (UPV/EHU, UNIOVI, UM) will also participate in the conference and present their lines of research.
The general objective of the research carried out by the PROMETEO 2011-048 Group is to determine and analyse a series of potential factors of vulnerability and resistance that can help explain individual differences in the response to social stress and, therefore, its impact on health. The results obtained will help increase the knowledge of the bases and mechanisms of individual differences in stress response, which is one of the biggest challenges for biomedical research today. They also intend to collaborate in the establishing the bases for the intervention strategies for the prevention and treatment of health disorders caused by social stress, contributing to the achievement of more specific and effective action programmes.
The research group "Stress and Health" (ESSA, Estrés y Salud) from the Department of Psychobiology of the University of Valencia has a long research career in field studies (women victims of gender violence, overtrained athletes, teacher burnout, non-professional caregivers...); laboratory studies with humans (mental, physical and social stressors) according to age and gender, and experimental animal studies (social isolation, social encounters, dominance-submission, social defeat).
