The Valencia work team of the European FIT FORTHEM project, which promotes new research and innovation strategies and concepts with which to establish the future research agenda of European universities, has met with Carlos Hermenegildo, vice-rector for Research at the University of València (UV) to present the book version of his work, FIT FORTHEM. Recomendaciones para el cambioinstitucional (‘FIT FORTHEM. Recommendations for institutional change’). The changes in university management arise in the areas of internationalisation, open science, co-creation and quadruple helix, knowledge transfer and science communication.
During the meeting, which took place in the rectorate building, the team led by María Dolores Pitarch, professor of Geography and delegate of the rector for University-Society programs, submitted a detailed report in book format based on the results obtained during the last three years of work in collaboration with the teams of the 7 original universities of the FORTHEM Alliance. They are: Dijon (France), Jyväskylä (Finland), Mainz (Germany), Opole (Poland), Palermo (Italy), Riga (Latvia), València (Spain) and Sibiu (Romania).
Among others and regarding researchers, it is proposed that universities can develop incentive structures that recognise international research, provide personalised assistance and can provide specific training on access to EU research funds. Regarding the student body, they propose including information about internationalisation opportunities in specific topics, through subjects or courses, to give them a global perspective. In addition, a strategy should be promoted to promote the internationalisation of students, among other issues.
The FIT FORTHEM project aims to model a quadruple helix transformation approach in cooperation with academia, industry, governance and citizens to set the future university research agenda; eliminate specific disadvantages of both institutions, researchers and students through the exchange of infrastructure, technologies, knowledge and services; or develop new models, processes and support structures to strengthen inter-institutional cooperation.
The FIT FORTHEM project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, has been a catalyst for the development and implementation of various methodologies within the FORTHEM Alliance. These improvement proposals are supported by extensive research and the practical application of different approaches during the course of the project, including a survey with several thousand responses, focus groups and in-depth interviews.
The FORTHEM Alliance, of which the University of Valencia is a member, has played a fundamental role in the exchange of knowledge and experiences between associated institutions. At the meeting on March 11, the team members present (Maria Dolores Pitarch, Principal Investigator of FIT FORTHEM; Esteban Sanchís, PI of FORTHEM at the UV and Isabel Mendoza, Feliz Fajardo, Jose Javier Serrano, Lola Garzón and Jose Manuel Barrueco) expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to share their recommendations and analyse their implementation at the UV, with which to strengthen the quality of research.
