The Fisabio Foundation, the University of Valencia (UV), the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), the CSIC Delegation in the Valencian Community and INCLIVA organise a new session of “Science and Beers”, a scientific dissemination project in which researchers Javier Puertas, Anabel Forte, Marcos López Juárez and Kike Nácher will talk to the public about their work through monologues and short and entertaining talks.

The event will be simultaneously translated into sign language by two interpreters from the Federation of Deaf People of the Valencian Community (FESORD). La Fábrica de Hielo is an independent cultural and creative centre located on the Cabanyal beach in Valencia.

Javier Puertas is the head of the “Sueño y Neurodegeneración” research group at Fisabio-La Ribera Health Department. He will present “Apps para el tratamiento del insomnio y otros trastornos del sueño” (‘Apps for the treatment of insomnia and other sleep disorders’), where he will talk about an application developed by the La Ribera University Hospital to fight insomnia and improve the quality of sleep of people who suffer from this disorder. Insomnia affects more than 30% of the population and the emotional responses it can trigger are: anxiety or frustration. Through this application, the inhibition ability is trained to manage thoughts and concerns that interfere with the ability to fall asleep.

For her part, Anabel Forte, a Statistics researcher at the University of Valencia (UV), will participate with her talk “Hech@s de incertidumbre” (‘Made out of uncertainty’). In it, she will reflect on how uncertainty is present on a day-to-day basis and how it affects the population: when checking the probability of rain on the mobile, reading percentages and interpreting graphs in the press or what happens if in the doctor’s office they indicate that cholesterol should be lowered, etc. For Forte, uncertainty is the material with which progress is built.

“El hidrógeno y yo” (‘Hydrogen and I’) is the title of the talk that will be given by Marcos López Juárez, a researcher at the CMT-Thermal Engines Institute of the UPV. It will explain what hydrogen is and will refute some of the preconceived ideas and prejudices about it such as: “hydrogen is very dangerous and explodes”, “hydrogen does not produce any polluting emissions” or “there is still a long way to go before we see a hydrogen car on the street”. The idea is to bring hydrogen closer to the public with a humorous monologue and for society to understand both its potential and the things to take into account about this chemical element.

Lastly, Kike Nácher, a researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Corpuscular Physics Institute (IFIC) will approach the audience on astronomy, more specifically the origin of the cosmos and the elements that make it up in his talk “La Cocina Cósmica: el Origen de los Elementos” (‘The Cosmic Kitchen: the Origin of the Elements’).

During the “Science and Beers” session there will be the collaboration of FESORD (Federation of Deaf People of the Valencian Community). Two interpreters will simultaneously translate the talk of the research staff into sign language. The entrance to attend “Science and Beers” will be free until full capacity is reached at the headquarters of the Fábrica de Hielo (José Ballester Gozalvo street, 37, Valencia).

The “Science and beers” project has the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology - Ministry of Science and Innovation.
