Ciència i Cultura en la Guerra. L’Institut d’Estudis Valencians 1937-1938 is a project that aims to recover the contribution and significance of this institution, which was one of the most ambitious initiatives to the reorganisation and boost of the Valencian science and culture. The catalogue reviews various aspects of the trajectory of an organization created in the midst of the Spanish Civil War, under extreme conditions but supporting modernity within the context of academic institutions. The Institute consisted of four sections: 1. History and Archaeology, 2. Philology, 3. Sciences and 4. Economic Studies. The chapters of this catalogue have been developed within this structure.
Thus, the publication is organised in nine sections that compose the texts by Francesc Pérez Moragón, starting the catalogue with a general approach to the formation of the Institute of Valencian Studies. The analysis continues with the studies by Albert Girona who exposes the section El contexto histórico de creación del Instituto de Estudios Valencianos (The historical context of the creation of the Institute of Valencian Studies) The figure of Francesc Bosch i Morata is analysed by Miquel Notari Ibanyes in Francesc Bosch Morata: El Instituto de Estudios Valencianos y el valencianismo político (Francesc Bosch Morata: the Institute of Valencian studies and the Valencian politics). Meanwhile, the study and promotion of the history, culture and Valencian language, and the corresponding composition of an orthography are established through the text by Emili Casanova Herrero entitled La sección Filológica del Instituto de Estudios Valencianos (The philological section of the Institute of Valencian studies). The proceedings of the Institute are analysed by Alfons Vila Moreno, as well as the chapter La sección Histórico-Arqueólogica (The Historical and Archaeological section) which is exhibited by Joaquim Juan Cabanilles. Also, the López Piñero IHMC researchers Josep Lluís Barona and Ximo Guillem are the responsible for reviewing La sección de Ciencias y la Promoción de la actividad científica (The Section of Sciences and Promotion of the scientific activity). Salvador Almenar Palau makes an analysis in his chapter La sección de Estudios Económicos: precedentes, miembros y actividades (The section of Economic Studies: precedents, members and activities). And, finally, Romà Seguí Francés closes the reviewing of this institute with the text La Biblioteca del País Valencià: el primer proyecto de Biblioteca Nacional Valenciana (The library of the Valencian Country: the first project of the Valencian National Library). The catalogue completes its study with the content of the proceedings of the Institute of Valencian studies.
