The Afghan writer, human rights activist and refugee in Spain Nadia Ghulam will hold a debate at the Faculty of Law of the Universitat de València on April 26th at 5 pm. Under the title ‘Ser refugiada: sobrevivir en la adversidad’ (Spanish for Being a refugee: surviving adversity), the author will talk about the situation in Afghanistan after the return of the Taliban to government in Kabul and her personal adventures as refugee, which is reflected in her novels.
The event, which will take place in the hall of the Faculty of Law (Tarongers Campus), will be attended by professors Javier Palao, dean of the Faculty of Law; Fernando Flores, director of the Institute of Human Rights of the Universitat de València; and Cristina García Pascual, head of the Literature Society, as representatives of the organising units of the event.
As Professor Fernando Flores explains, “this is a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about Nadia’s extraordinary personal story, as well as the reality of Afghanistan after the return of the Taliban to power in Kabul last September, a situation that has been forgotten but still deserves our attention”.
The Universitat de València, de Faculty of Law and the Institute of Human Rights have launched a scholarship programme for Afghan women university students whose studies have been cut short by the new government’s ban on them attending classes. The Valencia City Council and the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencia’s Government) are joining the programme. “With Nadia, we will have the opportunity to talk about the importance of supporting young women who, despite adversity, want to complete their education, and about the exemplary struggle that Afghan women have been maintaining to become full citizens in their country”, adds Fernando Flores.
