More than 600 students visit today Thursday the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences of the Universitat de València in order to take part in the Kangaroo Contest 2017. The students come from the Secondary Education centres of Riba-roja del Túria, San Antonio de Benagéber, Llíria, Manises, Moncada, Paterna and Quart de Poblet. All of them are students of 3rd and 4th of ESO (Spanish Secondary Education) and 1st and 2nd of Bachillerato (Spanish upper secondary school education).
The international association Le Kangourou sans frontières (KSF) aims to spread the mathematical culture by all means available and, in particular, by the organization of an annual game-contest which will take place the same day in all the participant countries. The aim of this initiative is to encourage and motivate as many students as possible and to contribute to the popularization of mathematics among the youth. It relies on a massive participation in a scientific event and it ensures a wide popular basis in this activity. The contest wants to attract as many participants as possible with no objective of national selection nor comparison between countries.
The local organisation is made up by the representation of the Universitat Jaume I, the Universitat Politècnica (with the headquarters of Campus de Vera, Gandia and Alcoi), the Universitat d’Alacant and the Universitat de València as well as the collaboration of the Al-Khwarizmi the Society of Mathematical Education.
This year there will be a record of students in all the territorial area. There will be 8710 students of the six levels (from 1st of ESO to 2nd of Bachillerato).
This year, the award ceremony, which rotates between the participant universities, will be celebrated in the Paranimf of the Universitat de València on Thursday 25 May. It will coincide with the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the mathematics studies in the Universitat de València.
