The Institute for Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), which is a Universitat de València-CSIC joint centre, has just been awarded the “Severo Ochoa” accreditation corresponding to the Centre of Excellence programme which is regulated by the State Secretariat for Research, Development and Innovation. The IFIC, which will receive one thousand euros annually for four years, is joining the 18 centres of excellence accredited in past editions.

Both the IFIC and the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC)  –which was distinguished by the same accreditation– have been selected for their scientific results and their strategic programmes, after a rigorous evaluation in which 115 international scientists of recognised prestige have participated, according to the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO). “The accredited centres stand out both for their international fame of the scientific contributions they make and for their ability to innovative and for their intense relationship with the business sector. Furthermore, they are referencial centres at global level able to attract international talent”.

The Institute for Corpuscular Physics is a leading experimental and theoretical research centre of particle physics, astroparticles and nuclear physics. Its participation in prestigious international activities is well established and it is at the forefront of scientific knowledge in fundamental physics. The centre participates in scientific collaborations around the world and it is, specially, involved in several experiments of the CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Even though the institute was restructured in 1985, when Universitat de València and the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) signed a specific convention for its creation, this already came fom a long tradition in Valencia for the research in Nuclear Physics and in Particles, both in their experimental and theoretical aspect.

The IFIC Director, Francisco Botella, remarked the importance of this fact for the IFIC. “The IFIC Scientifics’ excellence deserved the Severo Ochoa award. This is the best award that could be given to this staff of such extraordinary human qualities”, he said.

The IFIC staff in made up of more than 200 people of 30 nationalities. Even though its goal is basic research, the IFIC is involved in different technology transfer initiatives, specially in the field of Medical Physics.

With such programme, the Ministry seeks to consolidate a highly competitive basic excellence research.
