The 33rd edition of Universitat d’Estiu de Gandia has come to an end this Tuesday, 26 of July, with a round table discussion about Valencian regionalization. The director of International Centre of Gandia, Emili Aura, has taken stock of UEG 2016 and has evaluated the six days of courses, debates and cultural events as “very profitable”. Aura has reported that in this year´s edition the dynamic educational offer from previous years has been maintained and that more than 400 students, as well as the public, have participated in different open activities.

Under the motto “Territorial organization. From a local level to a global level”, full professor of Human Geography, Joan Romero, inaugurated the 33rd edition of Universitat d’Estiu de Gandia last Monday, the 18th of July. He pointed out that global materializes on the local level, in a world where different levels seem disjointed, and which calls for fighting against a social divide and deep inequalities among the population.

With regard to the round tables, different levels were analyzed, expounding the various European questions, such as immigration and refugees or a sustainable economy.

The course “Getting to know the cultural heritage of Valencian central regions”, directed exclusively toward students of Unisocietat and Unimajors, was taught, among others, by the director of the International Centre. The course was one among those with biggest attendance, with more than 150 attendees among which there were students from the Unisocietat programme of Cullera, Ontinyent, Quart de Poblet and La Eliana.

Among various round tables and lectures, one event was dedicated to looking back 30 years through the presentation of a book which is a collection by UEG and which, through more than 200 photographs and 188 pages, narrates from a first-person perspective the anecdotes, stories and experiences of hundreds of people who have taken part in Universitat d’Estiu de Gandia.

With regard to the future edition of UEG in 2017, director Aura has affirmed that his organization has already begun the work. “We will review the current model, taking an in-depth look at the possible incorporation of new activities and the search of participants from other sectors, so as to make this summer school a place of meetings, education, and knowledge linked to social and current realities”, he concluded.
