In Oncology, it is well established that the anticancer drugs are effective in only a small subset of patients. Moreover, many of the new targeted therapies inhibit specific proteins, and they are only effective in tumors that are genetically altered. Consequently, the success of personalized treatment depends on each individual molecular profile, which a priori can be considered as very heterogeneous.

Title: Talk: 1st Conference of R&D Conference Series in the Department of Computer Science

Date: 3 March 2017 (15:00h to 16:00h)

Place: Classroom 2.1

Speakers: Rafael Sebastian

Summary: Cardiac arrhythmias are one of the leading causes of mortality in Europe and impose a huge healthcare burden on society. Despite well-developed clinical guidelines for management of atrial fibrillation (AF) or ventricular tachycardia (VT), long-term treatment success rates remain unacceptably low due to complexity of the disease. Computational models of the electrical behavior of the heart have proved to be a useful tool for better understanding the biophysical principles of cardiac electrophysiology, and thus are beginning to be used to improve cardiac arrhythmia treatment. The primary aim of the research group CoMMLab is to develop and translate technologies bases on the Virtual Physiological Human into the clinical environment. In particular, we are building 3D models of the atria and ventricles from CT (Computerised Tomography) and MR (Magnetic Resonance) Imaging of real patients. Those models are used to perform multiscale simulations (from cell to organ scale) that are able to reproduce the electrical behaviour of the heart, both in healthy and pathological conditions. From that simulations biomarkers are obtained to improve characterisation and diagnosis of different pathologies with the aim of predicting and optimising complex cardiac therapies.

Biography: Pablo Mínguez is a biologist and has worked in the field of bioinformatics since 2003. Before beginning his Doctoral studies he had worked developing methods for the functional annotation of genes at the John Innes Centre (Norwich, UK) and developing the first genome browser and annotation tool of Arabidopsis in University of Nottingham (Nottingham, UK). Between 2004 and 2008 he did his Doctoral studies in Dr Joaquí Dopazo’s laboratory at the Príncipe Felipe Research Centre (Valencia), where he took part in the development of the platform for the functional analysis of large-scale experiments called “Babelomics” (http://www.babelomics.org) and developed algorithms of functional enrichment using different types of annotation of genes, among them, the SNOW programme, which looks for functional modules in genes or proteins lists from analysing their interactions (protein-protein interactions). Since 2009, during the following 5 years he has made a postdoctoral stay at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Heidelberg, Germany) in Dr Peer Bork team, where he has collaborated in the development of the database of prediction of protein interactions called “STRING” (http://string-db.org/). He has also studied the regulatory role of modifications on proteins after their translation. In addition, he is the developer of PTMcode database (http://ptmcode.embl.de/) that offers predictions of cross regulation of modifications on proteins.

Since September 2015, he has been working in the Health Research Institute Jiménez Díaz (Madrid), as part of the Department of Genomics and Genetics, where he organises the Bioinformatics Unit and develops his own line of research based on the study of the regulatory role of proteins in human diseases.

Summary: “Omic” technologies allow us to know the status and measure the activity of a huge quantity of genes, proteins, metabolites and other cellular elements at the same time. This facility is representing great progress in understanding the molecular bases of human diseases and also in building tools that allow their diagnosis.

Title: Workshop -  Artificial View Software HALCON 12

Date: 19 October 2016 (9:00 to 17:00h)

Place: Classroom 2.4

Summary:  HALCON is the most extended programming environment for the development of vision applications.  It may be used in multiple areas and applications.

The easiest way of learning to work with HALCON is to practise with HDevelop. HALCON provides many programmes and images as example of all the application areas for all kind of operations and methods.

This course is addressed to technicians who have artificial vision or programming knowledge and have interest in using HALCON for the development of applications.

The objective of this course is to have a potential idea of Halcon through its use and learning with HDevelop with the programming of application examples.

First of all, the participants learn how to purchase images from a camera. This is the first important step to develop an application. On this basis, participants develop a small application of analysis of blobs and a application of matching quest.

Secondly, we show different types of Halcon applications, so that participants can acquire a general knowledge about the potential of his tools and the difficulty of the applications made with Halcon.

He studied Chemical Sciences in this university, where he got the Special Award of B.A and where he got his doctorate in 1995. He is a member of the Theoretical Chemistry Unit in the Institute for Molecular Science of the UV, where he worked in the of quantum chemistry characterization of electroactive molecular systems.

He took an active part in the proceedings of educative innovation and  improvement of the educational quality. These proceedings were linked with the construction of the European Higher Education Area. In this context, he became part of the educative group who won the Second Award to the Educational Innovation in 2008,  awarded by the UEM and the Quality and Teaching Innovation Award in 2008  awarded by the Board of Trustees de la UV. In this context, he also won the Quality and Teaching Innovation Award 2010 of the Board of Trustees of the UV.

Summary: In a globalised world, one of the keys for the success of a country is the quality of the further education. In the last years, the proceeding of quality assurance have become general in our universities, but the establishment of a real quality culture is still a pending subject. Building a quality culture means to engage all the actors involved to reach the objectives of organisation and improvement continuously. So it can’t be limited to the use of management tools, but is has to arouse a joint of values and habits in all the collectives.

In our university, it has been a significant improvement in this area, but there is still a large number of set backs to overcome. Some of them drift from the superficial and bureaucratic use of the tools and the imbalance towards the accountability, which seems to push into the background the real improvement of the teaching-learning proceedings. So, it’s convenient to rethink the meaning of the proceedings carried in this area, optimize the relationship benefit/effort and distinguish between the things that are absolutely necessary to achieve and the ones that would be interesting, but not essential.
