Títle: Talk: High-level synthesis for Xilinx FPGAs with Vivado-HLS

Date: 2 June 2016 (15:30)

Place: Aula 3.0.1

Lecturer: Gustavo Sutter

Biography: Gustavo Sutter, Doctor in IT and Telecommunications by the Autonomous University of Madrid, Systems Engineer in the National University of the Center of the Buenos Aires Province (Argentina). He has over 15 years experience in designing systems based on FPGA. He specialises in the area of architecture of computers, digital designs with FPGA, computer arithmetic and high-performance computations. He has collaborated on many projects of national and European research and transfer projects with companies. He has wrote three books and a hundred technical papers. He has taught dozens of courses at different universities and participates actively in the training to companies. Currently, he is professor and researcher at the Escuela Politécnica Superior of the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid and coordinates the tasks of ElectraTraining for training and transferring in topics of embedded systems, PCBs and FPGAs design.

Summary: Hardware solutions for computer problems hold benefits in current speed and consumption in comparison to a microprocessor-based solution. The problem of this strategy is its high developmental cost and the difficulty of re-using solutions. A highly-used alternative in computation with high characteristics is that of using the Hardware Reconfigurable (FPGAs) which allow performance and consumptions with the possibility of reprogramming the hardware. The problem is still the high costs of development for the design of HDLs-based traditional use. Fortunately, in the last few years, high-level synthesis tools allow describing circuits in C/C++ descriptions  or other high-level languages.

This talk introduces the concepts found in high-level synthesis from the point of view of FPGAs Xilinx’s tool Vivado-HLS. After an introduction, there is a demo with the tool in order to visualise the benefits and flux of design.

Títle: Seminar Keysight Technologies: ‘Characterisation and Optimisation of Non-Linear Parameters in Amplifiers’

Date:  19 April 2016 (09:00 h - 13:15 h)

Place: Room 2.1.4

Summary: Generally, one of the components that consumes more energy and that does not generates non-linearities is the power amplifier, reason why all the design seeks to rise the spectral efficiency, the power efficiency and reducing distortion and non-linearities.

Characterisation through continuous wave signals (CW) allows for getting S parameters, spurious, understanding and distortion parameters of the amplifier, in a fast and efficient way in an only measure. Such characterisation can result incomplete due to, among other things, effects of memory and impedance matching in harmonic or intermodulation frequencies. For this reason, using complex signals, digitally modulated, is very useful to validate the non-lineal answer of the current active devices of high performances.

On the other side, when active devices are characterised, the correct balance between speed, performances and integrity of the measures is critical go get a competitive advantage of the final product.

This seminar provides new techniques and solutions of measuring to successfully face the current challenges of measuring and the new designs posed.

He also will talk about the importance of the knowledges of chemical engineering in the studies of fire dynamics, since fire is a chemical reaction subjected to many factors. Also, the constant development of chemical industry among other industries, has been translated in a bigger presence of the technological risk, therefore, in a new accident rate by different fires.

The talk will end with the fire prevention topic, a field with a very limited development, still with the importance of the fires and their consequences, provided that there is no regulated and specific training on such issue.

Title: Seminar “Technologies of Measurement Methods: Electromagnetic Characterisation and Impedance Measurement” by Keysight Technologies

Date:  7 October 2015 (09:00 h - 13:30 h)

Place: Room 2.1.3

Summary: Advancing in the research of materials technology and innovating in the use given to materials are a significant advantage. It is unpredictable knowing how to choose the most appropriate measurement technique, and for that it is necessary to understand the different measuring technologies, its strengths and its weaknesses.

In this seminar we will explore several materials measuring technologies, from complex impedance measuring to the electronic and magnetic characterisation; and we will tackle different measuring techniques that allow for the characterisation of very different materials. We will carry out measurements by using cutting-edge electronic measuring tools.

Títle: Diploma presentation “Applications and Drones Operation/RPAS”

Date:  18 September 2016 (11:00 h)

Place: "Joan Pelechano” Assembly Hall

Summary: The Diploma will allow students for getting both the specific degree of the Universitat de València and the Advanced Certificate of Knowledge for RPAS pilots, issued by the ATO Airpull Aviation.

The Diploma arises in the Universitat due to the undeniable impact unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones, are having when it comes to provide any kind of services. The idea is to join the research capacity with cutting-edge firms in the development and operation of drones, to collaborate in the teaching of a diploma that allows for transmitting knowledge and teaching its attendees the design bases of the many applications this kind of aircraft has this day and age. The conference if oriented to present to entrepreneurs, to people in charge of public organisations and representatives of the entities the composition of the group work in charge of teaching the Diploma, as well as also showing the collaboration framework that can be established in a future to implement new applications and services.

During the conference, as well as presenting the Diploma in Applications and Operations with Drones-RPAS, activities associated to it will also been exposed, which will develop throughout the academic year. Among them we can emphasise the specific professional collective events (journalists, air traffic controllers, meteorologists, business associations or city halls) and the different actions that will be carried out throughout the year in the airfield in Requena and in other areas enabled for the flight of Drones-RPAS.

The conference will continue with a visit to the facilities of the IRTIC Institute, where it will take place an exhibition of different aircraft, such as big sailboats, drones powered by turbine able of reaching 250 km/h, helicopters scale 1:4 and multicopters specialised in different applications.

After the presentation day the first events associated to the University Diploma. During the morning of Saturday 19 September it takes place the “Conference on Journalism and Drones”, action organised together with the COSO Foundation specifically destined so that means of communication professionals know the skills and opportunities drones offer for the development of their job.

Likewise, during the end of the week, it takes place the 3rd Len Mount Trophy, an international tournament of scale helicopters. It is expected that some of these models are exhibited in the IRTIC facilities to be able to be visited by the attendees.
