Our group belongs to two institutions: the University of Valencia and the Health Institute INCLIVA, a research Institute located at the University Clinic Hospital of Valencia. This advantageous situation allows us to collaborate directly with clinicians of a wide range of disciplines to develop a proper translational research.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), predominantly coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, remain the main cause of death in most European countries and atherosclerosis is the main contributor to the pathogenesis of myocardial and cerebral infarction. In recent years, it has become evident that systemic inflammation is the main driver of the development of premature atherosclerosis and its complications. In this regard, there is evidence to support that a low-grade systemic inflammation is often associated with metabolic disorders such as obesity and metabolic syndrome. Since 1992 our group has been working in the area of Immunity and Inflammation and more precisely in understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in endothelial dysfunction. Consequently, we have found new potential biomarkers of CVD and/or new therapeutic interventions to prevent endothelial dysfunction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and menopause. Nowadays, we are applying our know-how to cardiometabolic diseases and a joined projects between our and the Clinic Hospital Endocrinology group, both belonging to the University of Valencia and the Institute of Health Research (INCLIVA) is now being built up. Additionally, new active compounds with therapeutic potential application in cardiometabolic disorders are currently being developed thanks to the chemist that joined our research team few years ago. These collaborations will allow us to provide new insights to disease understanding, therapeutic success and generation of patentable new drugs. At present, inflammation and immunology are cutting edge areas in the understanding of cardiometabolic diseases, cancer and neurological disorders among other disease states.
