    Adolescence and short stature: factors in adjustment to the diagnosis

    Purpose Adolescence is a time of change when suffering from a medical condition such as short stature can impact the emotional well-being of adolescents. Our objective was to study the adjustment of adolescents with short stature (SS), analyzing the factors influencing it. Method In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated 101 adolescents with SS from different hospitals in Valencia, Spain, using instruments validated for the sample: anxious and depressive symptomatology (as a diagnostic adjustment measure), psychopathology, self-esteem, physical self-concept, psychological well-being, and parenting styles. Descriptive analyses, t-tests for independent samples, Pearson correlations, hierarchical regressions, and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis models (fsQCA) were performed. Results Emotional (β = 0.44; p  = 0.001) and hyperactive (β = 0.20; p = 0.001) symptoms predicted anxiety, emotional symptomatology (β = 0.25; p = 0.022), self-esteem (β = − 0.37; p = 0.001), and promotion of autonomy (β = 0.30; p = 0.001) predicted depression, and hyperactivity (β = 0.45; p = 0.001), self-esteem (β = − 0.43; p = .001), and humor (β = − 0.36; p = 0.001) predicted emotional distress. The fsQCA results show that none of the variables is a necessary condition for anxiety, depression, or emotional distress. However, different combinations of these variables are sufficient conditions to explain 85% of the high levels of anxiety, 81% of the low levels, 62% of the high levels of depression, 64% of the low levels of depression, and 74% of the high levels of emotional distress and 61% of the low levels. The most important variables in the fsQCA models were symptomatology, self-esteem, and parental styles. Conclusion The patient’s family dynamics, self-esteem, and emotional difficulties were the most relevant factors in predicting adjustment.

Although there are many instruments to assess its cognitive dimension, this is not so in the case of dispositional thinking. Our aim is to examine the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Critical Thinking Disposition Scale (CTDS; Sosu, 2013). Method Data come from 1064 students in their final years at high school and university in Spain. We report validity evidence based on its internal structure by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and an estimation of reliability and measurement invariance by gender. Additionally, nomological validity study with a multiple-indicator multiple-causes, MIMIC model, for the university students is provided. Results Three CFAs are reported, with evidence supporting the one-factor structure as the best representation of the data: χ2(44) = 413.556 (p < .001); CFI = .976; RMSEA = .089[.081,.097]; SRMR = .031; ECV = .889. With this structure, measurement invariance between boys and girls is tested and the scalar model is retained. Differences in latent means are found, favoring girls (d = 0.449; se = .065; p < .001). The reliability of CTDS is adequate, with a Cronbach’s alpha of .777 and a CRI value of .925. When tested in university students, the MIMIC model offers evidence for nomological validity: higher levels are found for women (β =.111, p < .050) and also for those with higher levels of rational thinking (β = .577, p < .010). Conclusions The Spanish version of the CTDS has good psychometric properties (including gender measurement invariance not yet reported in literature), and is suitable for being used to measure the disposition to critical thinking in youth. The relevance and implications of these results are further discussed.

We carried out tests of reliability, construct and criterion validity and a comparison of means based on the diagnosis and socio-demographic variables. The reliability and validity analyses showed adequate psychometric properties for this scale, with better results obtained for a single dimension after eliminating 3 items. Results: adolescents with type 1 diabetes and girls were found to have an increased threat perception of their illness. Anxiety/depression was positively associated with the perception of illness. Conclusion: this questionnaire is a useful and practical tool for evaluating adjustment to illness in pediatric patients.

    Alcohol use and abuse and motivations for drinking and non-drinking among Spanish adolescents: Do we know enough when we know parenting style?

Adolescents from indulgent parenting style homes had equal adjustment (lower self-enhancement and higher harsh preventive rules and awareness of alcohol's harmful effects) or even better (lower social acceptance) than those from authoritative parenting style homes. Consistently, the highest risk parenting styles identified were the authoritarian and neglectful styles (α=.05). Conclusion: At least in some cultures, warmth and reasoning, shared by authoritative and indulgent parenting styles, seem the recommended way to protect offspring from drinking. Effective alcohol prevention and intervention programs should include strategies tailored specifically to this new cultural context where parenting takes place.

    Adolescence is a challenging time when emotional difficulties often arise. Self-esteem, good relationships with peers, and emotional competences can buffer the effects of these difficulties. The difficulties can be even greater when coupled with the presence of a chronic physical illness (CD). Our goal is to analyze psychosocial factors and CD as predictors for anxiety and depression. It was compared the results of structural equation models (SEM) with models based on qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to analyze the possible influence of these variables on levels of anxiety-depression in adolescents with and without CD. The sample consisted of 681 adolescents, between 12 and 16 years old (M = 13.94, SD = 1.32). 61.50% were girls and 13.40% (n = 222) presented a CD (mainly pneumo-allergic and endocrine). They were evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Self-esteem Questionnaire, the Emotional Competences Questionnaire and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. The results obtained by SEM show that low self-esteem, problems with peers and low emotional competencies predict anxiety in 41% of the variance and depression in 72%. The results obtained by QCA show that the different combinations of these variables explain between 24 and 61% of low levels of anxiety and depression and 47–55% of high levels. Our data show how the presence of a CD, low self-esteem, problems with peers and problems in emotional skills play a fundamental role in explaining levels of anxiety and depression. These aspects will help provide increased resources for emotional adjustment in the educational context, facilitating the transitions to be made by adolescents.

The objective of this study was twofold: (1) to present the Positive Development Program for Adolescents living in rural areas (DPAR Program) and (2) to pilot test the intervention program. The DPAR program was evaluated using a repeated-measures design before and after the intervention, with an intervention group and a control group. The sample consisted of 176 adolescents between 11 and 15 years old (M = 12.89, SD = 0.90) who belonged to two high schools with similar characteristics located in rural settings. A mixed-design analysis of variance was performed for each dependent variable. Results showed a significant increase in most of the study variables (self-esteem, self-efficacy, group identity, empathy, relational skills, assertiveness, and conflict resolution) and a significant decrease in alexithymia, as well as better academic performance. All this evidence indicates that the DPAR program is effective in promoting positive adolescent development and addresses the lack of programs based on the PYD approach in rural areas.

    La pandemia mundial del COVID-19 ha traído una gran cantidad de cambios vitales para la sociedad. Ante esta situación, las familias y sus hijos han tenido que adaptarse a nuevas rutinas y situaciones, lo que puede haber aumentado o agravado el padecimiento de sintomatología emocional. No obstante, la presencia de resiliencia y de estrategias de regulación emocional positivas, puede amortiguar este impacto en las familias con hijos pequeños. El objetivo del presente trabajo es conocer las variables que explicaban los problemas de ajuste emocional familiar ante la pandemia del COVID-19,teniendo en cuenta las díadas de progenitores y sus hijos adolescentes. Participaron 31 díadas de adolescentes entre 11 y 19 años (M =13.90; DT=1.85) y sus cuidadores principales, siendo el 93,50% madres. Tras aceptar participar en el estudio se evaluó la regulación emocional (Cuestionario de Regulación Emocional; ERQ), la resiliencia (Escala de Resiliencia de Connor-Davidson; CD-RISC) y la sintomatología ansiosa, depresiva y el estrés(Escala de Depresión, Ansiedad y Estrés; DASS). Se realizaron modelos de análisis comparativo cualitativo de conjuntos difusos (fsQCA). En la explicación del desajuste emocional de los cuidadores, el clima familiar negativo y las estrategias de regulación emocional deficientes en sus hijos fueron las variables más relevantes. En la explicación del malestar emocional de los adolescentes, lo fueron la baja resiliencia de estos y las estrategias deficientes de regulación emocional de sus padres.     Association between group identification at school and positive youth development: Moderating role of rural and urban contexts

The present paper aims to examine parents’ contribution (i.e., authoritative, indulgent, authoritarian, and neglectful) to adolescents’ self-esteem and internalization of environmental values. Participants were 308 Spanish adolescents with 171 females (55.5%), between 12 and 17 years old. The four parenting styles were defined using measures of parental warmth and strictness. Self-esteem was captured with global and multidimensional measures. Internalization of environmental values was evaluated by measuring the priority given to biospheric values. Results revealed a consistent pattern between parenting styles and adolescent self-esteem and internalization of environmental values. Overall, adolescents from homes characterized by parental warmth (i.e., indulgent and authoritative) have higher self-esteem and greater internalization of environmental values than their counterparts. These findings clearly contrast with those obtained in other cultural contexts where parental strictness is essential in achieving well-adjusted children with optimal psychosocial development.
