Director of the Centre for Innovation in Law (CID-ICADE) and former President of the Spanish Bioethics Committee.
Professor Federico de Montalvo Jääskeläinen studied Law at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, graduating in 1990. Starting in 1992, he began his professional practice as a lawyer, founding his own law firm in 1998, Asjusa Letramed, which is a law firm specialized in Medical Law and Biolaw, having held the position of President of the firm until 2009.
In 2008, he defended his doctoral thesis about the legal-constitutional nature of the living will, obtaining the qualification of outstanding cum laude, having received said thesis the honorable mention for the best doctoral thesis defended at the Faculty in that year. He has been providing his services as a professor since 1997, first, as an hourly contract, to later join as a dedicated professor, currently holding the teaching status of Associate Professor in the Area of Constitutional Law.
Since January 2013 he has been a member of the Spanish Bioethics Committee, having held the Vice Presidency of said advisory body from 2013 to 2018 and from January 2019 his Presidency by appointment of the Minister of Health, and since April 2014 the condition of member of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) of UNESCO.
He is a corresponding Academician of the Royal Academies of Medicine and Pharmacy of Murcia. He has been part, by appointment of the Ministry of Health, of the group of experts for the National Vaccination Strategy against Covid-19, since September 2020, having actively participated in the development of the ethical criteria for the prioritization of vaccines. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Health Lawyers, the Spanish Association for Healthcare Risk Management and the Ibero-American Association of Healthcare Law.
