Second Round

Second Round is a consolidated innovation project (linked to the Consolidated Group GCID23_2584190) focused on promoting art education within the context of secondary education. During the 2024–2025 academic year, we have continued with the project “Second Round: Art and Struggle in Secondary Education,” now in its ninth consecutive edition, centering our work around heritage education as a core theme. We actively foster partnerships with institutions dedicated to heritage education, including secondary schools, museums, interpretation centers, and heritage sites.

The emphasis on heritage education is reinforced by a wide range of activities we carry out in this field. Alongside ongoing initiatives in schools and heritage environments, the project “Dechados: Inclusive Creativity in Secondary Education through Connections Between Museums and Educational Centers” (PID2021-123007OB-I00) is underway, as well as the 22nd edition of the Specialist Diploma in Art Education and Museum Management.

We also continue to deepen research in this field. In October 2024, we hosted the 1st International DECHADOS Conference: Museums, Education, Creativity, and in November 2024, the 13th International Conference on Research in Art Education, focused on Research Journals. Together, these initiatives position the University of Valencia as an international benchmark in educational innovation in heritage and heritage education.

In addition to secondary school teachers and students, we have consistently worked with AVALEM—the Valencian Association of Museum and Heritage Educators—a pioneering organization in Spain. AVALEM brings a valuable perspective to artistic mediation in heritage contexts and provides employment opportunities for students in the Master's in Secondary Education Teaching program.

Working with secondary schools is crucial to support the integration of innovative theories and practices, and to promote awareness of the learning opportunities available in heritage contexts. We believe that education must not be left behind in the face of the social, cultural, and political innovations we are experiencing. This commitment is reflected in teacher training programs, especially the Master’s in Secondary Education Teaching. We are also concerned with providing continuing professional development for secondary school teachers, both in art and in other disciplines interested in heritage education.

The direct connection to the Master’s in Secondary Education Teaching comes from the involvement of both its faculty and students, who have been deeply engaged in recent editions of Second Round. Many of the project team members teach both in the Master's program and in secondary schools. We also collaborate with secondary school teachers and maintain ties with several universities, including ongoing collaborations with María José Gómez Aguilella (VIVO), Emilio Martínez (Universitat Politècnica de València), Rafael Sumozas (University of Castilla-La Mancha), and María Dolores Arcoba (Florida Universitaria).
