On Friday, December 4, sessions 5 and 6 of the Family Business Employability Course organized by the Chair of Family Business of the University of Valencia took place. Miguel Navarro (Commercial Law Area of Broseta Abogados) and Pilar González (Professor of Psychology at the UV) were in charge of giving these sessions.

Miguel Navarro holds a law degree from the University of Valencia and currently serves as a lawyer in the commercial law area of Broseta Abogados, specializing in Family Business and family protocol development.

Pilar González teaches in the areas of Social Psychology and Labour Psychology and Organizations of the University of Valencia and participates in research projects.

"Understanding the legal peculiarities of the Family Business" was the title chosen by Miguel Navarro to present his session to the students. First, Miguel explained the different problems arising from the Family Business mentioning that: "There is an obvious problem with the involvement of successors in the management of Family Companies".

"As the company becomes more mature, complexity is added in the structure, and this is due to the interaction between the family"

Miguel Navarro

Miguel also explained what a family protocol is and the reasons why it is advisable to apply it in Family Companies highlighting that: "Family protocol is a unique document, a tailor-made suit for each company and each family"

Also, Miguel referred to the importance of correctly and well in advance drafting the will, since in his words: "The will is a document written in life with consequences after death, so it must be totally clear and meridian."

For her part, Pilar González raised a very dynamic and participatory session under the title "Mediation Strategies and Conflict Management in The Family Business". Pilar began by exposing the metaphor of the aircraft and engaging students with the aim of finding among all that could generate conflicts in the future.

"You must look for all those aspects that may generate conflicts in the future"

Pilar González

After the explanation of the metaphor, Pilar offered some useful and practical elements with which to start managing the conflicts caused in the Family Companies, among them:

• The differentiation between conflict of task and conflict of relationship

• Interdependence of goals

• Effective communication

Finally, Pilar explained "the case of Miguel", which through the division of the conference into six working groups, achieved the sharing of the different perceptions of each of the groups on the case, making this a very interesting and collaborative session.

Next Friday we will have María Beltrán (FIBAC Consultant) and Marta Beltrán (GMM Family Office Management) to tell us about "The role of employees in the management of emotions and transmission of values in the Family Company" and "Distinguish financial areas of the Family Company"
