The Chair participates in the debate with parliamentary groups and citizens on the proposals contained in the manifesto, which has already been signed by 128 feminist groups and women’s associations.

From the Chair for Feminist Economics we support the manifesto ‘For the Equality of Women in Pensions’. Thus, the 2 of March, a debate was held with parliamentary groups and citizens on the proposals contained in the manifesto, which has already been signed by 128 feminist groups and women’s associations.

The significance of the initiative becomes more relevant because of the current context. Now that changes are being announced, the updated revision of the Toledo Pact, we demand for the government to assume the commitment of gender equality, acting coherently on three axes:

  • To equalise salaries and paid time throughout the “working life” of women and men.
  • Public services and working hours that distribute care to children and dependents.
  • To complement in the short term, the lower pensions, which are mostly for women.

The Manifesto for the Equality of Women in Pensions includes a mapping of the gender gap in pensions that affects women, in the different types of pensions, contributory and non-contributory, and proposes a minimum covenant to solve them with specific measures, ordered on the basis of 8 action lines:

  1. To speed up equality in salaries and time spent on contributions by women and men, in order to stop feeding inequality in pensions.
  2. To substitute unpaid care work for paid work and public services.
  3. To examine the “maternity leave” and other measures.
  4. General reduction in working hours, not the generalisation and feminisation of part-time work and leave.
  5. To be less dependent on the widowhood’s pension.
  6. Real equality in social security for domestic and agricultural workers.
  7. To increase supplements to minimum and non-contributory pensions since those supplements are rescuing women from poverty
  8. Gender equality, main transversal objective of the public and solidarity-based pension system.
