Women had to go through numerous obstacles when they tried to introduce themselves into the jazz world. Due to the dominant sexism, jazz places didn’t understand their meddling and society disapproved of women and men mixed in night clubs.
At the beginning of the swing era in the 30s, female orchestras began to appear, mostly during the Second World War, since many male instrument players were taken by the army. This way orchestras such as Ina Ray Hutton and Her Melodears Orchestra were born.
The conquer of women in jazz, however, was that some of them were able to get into male groups, like the pianist Mary Lou Williams, that arranged compositions and played with figures like Duke Ellington.
For this project of history recovery, Eva Romero interpretes a repertory that includes compositions written by those women who opened the path to the rest and that we have the duty of restoring.
