In the conference “The return of inequality: social change and the weight of the past”, the professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics, Mike Savage, will address a crucial issue for our contemporary societies: the growing inequalities and the threat it poses to the very pillars of liberal democracies. As he thoroughly analyses in this book of the same name, recently published by Harvard University Press, deepening economic inequalities and the fracturing of social bonds are moving us further and further away from the democratic principles on which Western societies should be based. Ultimately, inequality threatens to return us to a past scenario characterised by the dominance of empires, dynastic elites and ethnic divisions, which we thought we had already overcome.
