AlumniUV: Make the best compost for your plants
Face-to-face

The AlumniUV Community carries on a workshop at the Jardín Botánico (Botanical Garden) of the Universitat de València which will be complemented by a guided visit.

Compost is the way nature recycles parts of plants. The organic matter is transformed into compost by millions of microorganisms and invertebrates. In this workshop we will study this process, its most important phases, how it is done, etc., and we will visit the compost zone of the Botánico. As a practice we will measure the porosity, the pH and the level of water retention.

In this practice, we will observe how compost is formed, the steps to follow, we will measure the temperature of the compost pile and then, in the lab, we will measure its porosity, water retention capacity and pH. We will also study worms live, their constitution and main body parts: clitellum, head and tail, and the arrow worms. Lastly, we will take a close look of the vermicomposting and worm humus.
