Warnings about the dangers of the proliferation of lies in the public space have become omnipresent. The alarms about the risks of normalising the post truth are found all around. The threat of the ultra right wing wave can be seen at the front pages. What we have been needing was a dotted line connecting all those dangers: the indifference towards truth, the pseudo journalism of fake news and the attack of populism against democracy. We needed to analyse the interaction of those three universes between each other to understand that the threat is systematic and affects us all. Without a warned and awake citizenship, we have no salvation at all. Although the truth isn’t in fashion, it still is key to answer the question: how much truth can a dictatorship withstand and how many lies can the democracies hold? That is the key question, and that is what this book is about (June 2025).
