The 43 Universitat d’Estiu de Gandia (UEG) completes its programme with the Activitats Obertes (Open Activities), a cultural proposal, alongside the training activity, that will turn Gandía into a meeting space of reflection and dissemination for the next weeks.
The debate of “Converses amb…”, live music at nights and two exhibition proposals constitute the cultural programme, open to the public from 2 to 15 July, with activities focused on international news, scientific dissemination, journalism, and artistic heritage.
In the critical and reflexive section, “Conversa amb…” highlighted figures of the university field, journalism and scientific dissemination will attend, in order to analyse news issues from a critical and plural perspective. All the talks will take place at 7:30pm at the Casa de Cultura Marqués de González de Quirós in Gandia.
On Thursday, 2 July, the first event, framed in the Alfons Cucó Chair of Political Reflection, will bring together Aurora Bosch, full professor of the Universitat de València, and the journalist and International boss of À Punt Vicent Montagud, who will discuss the main scenarios of the international policy.
Open activities of the evening will continue on Monday, 6 July, with the mathematician and communicator Clara Grima, who will share her experience bringing maths closer to all audiences. On Wednesday, 8 July, journalists Sergi Pitarch and Loreto Ochando will address the reconstruction of the DANA events from the book Les hores del caos (The hours of the chaos), while the journalist and director of Infolibre –Jesús Maraña–, and the writer Alfons Cervera will headline the last conversation, on Friday, 10 July.
The cultural programme will also have night activities, that will take place at 9:30pm at the Jardín de la Marquesa. In this edition, protagonists will be the Big Band UV, a group of musicians linked to the Universitat de València who will perform a concert with a repertoire that will go through different styles of contemporary jazz, from swing and latin jazz to funk and other trending styles.
The cultural programme will end up with two exhibitions that will be inaugurated on 14 July. The Sala Tossal of the International Centre of Gandia will host –until 31 August– the exhibition produced by UVsociety ‘Visca l'arròs! Gutiérrez visita Gandia’, an adaptation to the exhibition presented by the Rector Peset Hall of Residence. It brings back the creative universe of the Gutiérrez magazine and the figure K-Hito, and it also incorporates a selection of historical images of Gandía’s fallas world. The exhibition room of the House of Culture Marqués de González de Quirós will present as well –until 31 August– ‘Estampes de transició. Obres gràfiques de la Col·lecció Martínez Guerricabeitia’, a selection of contemporary graphic art pieces of the collection that values the artistic heritage from the Universitat de València, and invites to reflect upon the big social, political, and cultural changes of the second half of the 20th century.
With this programme, the Universitat d’Estiu de Gandia strengthens its commitment to open knowledge to society, complementing the academic offer with cultural proposals that promote debate, dissemination, and citizen participation.
The Alfons Cucó Chair analyses the new balances of the international policy
The first talk of “Converses amb…” will be devoted to the international geopolitical situation, as part of the programme of the Alfons Cucó Chair of Political Reflection.
The talk will bring together Aurora Bosch, full Professor of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of the Universitat de València, and Vicent Montagud, head of the international news of À Punt, who will examine some of the main flashpoints of the international scene, including the relations between the United States and Iran, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the political situation in Latin America.
During her intervention, Aurora Bosch will analyse in detail the historical circumstances that led the United States to elect Donald Trump twice, despite his challenges to democratic rules and traditions. The historian will explore the political and social factors to explain the “Trump decade”, and will reflect upon the evolution of the American political system towards models with a greater concentration of power of the executive branch.
