Gustavo Durán will be the star of this year's 10th Safor Republican Conferences organised by the Republican Association of La Safor, the Gandia International Centre and the City Council of Gandia.

The conferences will take place between 11 and 13 April and will be dedicated to the composer and writer of the “Generation of '27”, Gustavo Durán, who not only served in the Republic as a lieutenant colonel, but was later an official of the United Nations. At the end of March, when the forces of coup leader General Francisco Franco were approaching Valencia, Durán managed to leave the port of Gandia on board a British destroyer along with other Republican refugees.

"He was a character with a very important role and many people in Valencia and throughout Spain do not know who he was. This fact is proof of the lack of the Law of Democratic Memory. The country is full of personalities who have done a lot for the world of culture, science, etc., and have been in the shadows for 80 years", said Salva Sanchis, president of the Republican Association of La Safor.

The programme will start at 19:00 on Thursday at the Gandia International Centre (CIG). First, the writer and filmmaker from Bilbao, Inés García Albi, will present her bibliographic video about this year's protagonist. Afterwards, there will be a conference by the English historian Helen Graham, who specialises in the Spanish Civil War and the Franco era.

On Friday 12 April, the CIG will once again host an event at 19:00, when the poet and daughter of the militant, Jane Durán, will give a literary recital together with the poet Alejandro Duque.

Finally, on Saturday at 19:30, the Crown Hall of the Ducal Palace will be the setting for a concert by the author's sister, Lucy Durán, based on her father's work. She will be accompanied by the guitarist Samuel Diz and the tenor Jonathan Alvarado.

The conference is organised by the Republican Association of La Safor, the Gandia International Centre and the Gandia City Council and is open to the general public.
