Summary:
Despite the fact that printed scientific editions are usually linked to just a few names (the ones of the author, the editor and the research centre), over the last years there has been an effort to broaden this list with other names that are also responsible for the publications (reviewers, printers, distributors, etc.) and address the role they play in the process. In this regard, this seminar will specially focus on translators, understood as mediators in the process of construction of legitimate scientific knowledge in a dictatorial context: the Francoist regime.
We will try to make a biographical sketch of the Gustavo Gili publishing house’s translators, these other authors that are, many times, forgotten. We will focus on their socio-professional profiles, and also on their translations, looking for denominative variants of specific terms (from periphrastic forms to introduction of new technical terms and nomenclature of their own). We will also discuss how they adapted to the expectations of the editors (and of the readers) while still protecting their own interests, both professional and economic. In practice, the work of these translators ranged from being mere adaptors of foreign texts to informing the publishing house of publications that could potentially be of interest for their catalogue.
