On October 2018 the “Enseñar gramática en secundaria. Hacia un cambio en el modelo didáctico” conference took place at the University of Salamanca, organised by the Cátedra de Altos Estudios del Español and the Centro Internacional del Español.

The first plenary conference, La reflexión metalingüística en el aprendizaje de la lengua: objetivos, niveles y objetos de la reflexión  (Metalinguistic reflection in language learning: objectives, levels and objects of reflection) by Anna Camps adressed the importance of research on the metalinguistic activity of Primary and Secondary School pupils and their ways of reflecting on language, from which she showed different examples in order to approach the transfer from the spontaneous to the scientific concepts in the grammar teaching during obligatory education.

In the second conference, Ideas para mejorar la enseñanza de la gramática en secundaria y bachillerato (Ideas for improving grammar teaching in Secondary School and Bachillerato), Ignacio Bosque advocated for stimulating the children’s natural tendency of exploring through examples of grammar activities, with the aim of fostering in pupils the curiosity of languages and developing their capacity of metalinguistic reasoning.

The round table La gramática en secundaria. Entre el uso instrumental y el conocimiento científico (Grammar in secondary school. Between instrumental use and scientific knowledge) completed the conference. Carmen Rodríguez Gonzalo (Giel-UV), Edita Gutiérrez (Groc-UCLM), Miguel Ángel Aijón (IES Senara-U.Salamanca) and Trinidad Sánchez (IES La Vaguada, Salamanca) participated in this round table.

Each participant presented their stance from the questions made by Julio Borrego, and from the common interest of improvement of grammar teaching. Carmen Rodríguez defended the need of a grammar teaching that promotes the pupils’ reflection on linguistic uses and that becomes a tool that regulates their capacity for expression, especially in writing and complex oral uses.

The successful attendance throughout the conference showed the interest of teachers in the subject and encouraged the organisers to think about further events on grammar teaching, which we will follow with interest.
