In 2018 the book How languages are learnt in secondary school was published in the Perifèric publishing house. Student’s opinions on languages teaching-learning and possible didactic implications, by Pilar Garcia Vidal, member of the GIEL group.
The aim proposed is to improve educational practice so as to make easier learning and acquiring languages by paying attention to student’s opinions on how is the best way to learn them, based on their experience in the rooms. In order to encourage a multilingual and intercultural education it is essential to be sensitive towards linguistic and cultural diversity.
The analysis of student’s opinions offers a perspective of what happens in the room when languages are learnt. It allows us to discover different methodological profiles according to the languages taught and to pay attention to several contents and procedures that boost their learning.
The teaching of languages has to meet as accurately as possible students’ needs and take account of the context in which each of them is learnt.
If we know student’s opinions on what they consider most useful for boosting learning different languages, we can reflect on the practices used in the room for improving their effectiveness, since it is the student who make final decisions on their learning, not the teacher.
