In the current context of climate change and accelerated population growth, optimizing the use of water and nitrogen in crops are key aspects to increase plant resilience and sustainable production, avoiding the depletion of natural resources and soil pollution and biodiversity loss to which local varieties are particularly susceptible that are currently disappearing at an unprecedented rate. It is therefore imperative to implement advanced smart and sustainable agronomic strategies.

Description

The objective of this Project proposal is the development of tools based on miMEPs to modulate the physiological changes necessary to maximize the efficient use of water and nitrogen, and the development of plant monitoring systems through innovative proximal detection techniques that will allow individualized interventions for each situation. Specifically, the proposal we present in this expression of interest aligns with the following sublines of research and innovation of AGROALNEXT (lines 1 to 5):

  • Action 1.2. Adaptation to climate change. Resilience of agricultural production to the effects of climate change and water scarcity and its role in mitigating risks to society. The development of strategies to improve crop tolerance to drought stress or nitrogen use efficiency will have a major impact on establishing sustainable food production systems, increasing agricultural productivity, implementing resilient agricultural practices and preserving high-value local varieties highly valued by the consumer.
  • Action 3.1. Precision Agriculture. The project will develop a plant monitoring system through proximal detection aimed at the farmer that will allow him to have a digital application that will facilitate flexible decision-making to guide him in carrying out the appropriate interventions depending on the conditions in which the crops are.
  • Action 3.4. Research into disruptive technologies and advanced solutions to improve intelligent monitoring of orchards and farms. The project aims to obtain developments based on highly innovative molecular and digital tools: miPEPs and proximal remote sensing.
