Research activity focuses on acquiring new knowledge about fungi, seaweeds and plants, which is applied:
- In studies on the biodiversity of: fungi, lichens, seaweeds, bryophytes and vascular plants, in the Iberian Peninsula, Mediterranean Sea and other areas.
- For the solution of problems related to their Identification, Systematics, Phylogeny, Biogeography and Conservation status.
The research activity is carried out with a multidisciplinary approach from different perspectives developing four lines of research: "Mycology and Lichenology", "Marine Botany", "Bryology" and "Plant ecology".
- Studies on the biogeography, systematics and diversity of lichens and other Mediterranean fungi. Conservation. Biodeterioration.
- Studies on the systematics and diversity of benthic seaweeds and marine phanerogams in the western Mediterranean.
- Studies on the biogeography, systematics, phylogeny and diversity of the bryophyte flora of the Iberian Peninsula. Conservation aspects.
- Studies of the biogeography, systematics and diversity of the Mediterranean vascular flora. Conservation.
- Bryology
Study of the bryophyte flora of Mediterranean environments. Biogeography of mosses and liverworts. Systematics and phylogeny of bryophytes. Assessment of the conservation status of bryophyte species.
- Mycology included Lichenology
Systematics and identification of lichens (both fungus and lichenised algae) and non-lichenised fungi (including mushroom-forming fungi) of the Mediterranean area, as well as the identification of their secondary metabolism products. Conservation of species and their habitats. Biodeterioration of monuments.
- Phycology and marine Botany
Study of the biodiversity, systematics and nomenclature of Mediterranean benthic seaweeds and marine phanerogams. Conservation of species and their habitats.
- Plant taxonomy and ecology
Plant ecology (dune vegetation, nitrophilous vegetation, scrubland, forest fires, bioclimatology and biogeography); plant taxonomy (cariology, phenology, phylogeography, nomenclature); conservation biology.
