Description

This project will develop a new value chain for rice straw conversion into high value biofuel and bulk biobased chemicals as sustainable solution for circular economy of the rice crop from the iconic natural park of l’Albufera (Valencia). The bioricefinery approach, combining state of the art experimental and process simulation methodologies, will advance on a cost-efficient and sustainable solution for producing biobutanol, lactic acid and succinic acid. The proposed solution will face environmental problems derived from rice straw management while contributing to society sustainable decarbonisation. Technical barriers for the deployment of lignocellulosic biorefineries will be addressed from a) the use of deep eutectic solvent (des)-based microwave-assisted extraction, b) the recycling of enzymes, c) the development of high-cell density fermenters, d) the development of advanced in-situ techniques for product recovery and e) the integration of up-, mid- and down-stream processes.
