On the occasion of the 29th World Teachers’ Day, established on the 5 October 1994 by the UNESCO, an international itinerant conference for the training of teachers of all levels was celebrated.
The lectures of the conference, under the title “Global education in the Mediterranean: a reality and a future challenge”, were held from 4 to 9 October in the Università di Messina, Italy. They reflected on the transformative power of the global, intercultural and interdisciplinary education and its role in the construction of critical thinking.
María Vicenta Mestre Escrivá, Principal of the Universitat de València, and Salvatore Cuzzocrea, Principal of the Università di Messina, participated in the event. Federico Mayor Zaragoza, former Director-General of the UNESCO and president of the “Cultura de Paz” Foundation, gave a master lecture through a videoconference.
The lectures have been organized by the Università di Messina with the collaboration of the UNESCO-UV Chair on Global Education in the Mediterranean: Studies for Peace, Interculturality and Sustainability. During the closure ceremony, the co-directors of the Chair, Vicent Gozálvez and Patrizia Panarello, presented a manifesto in relation to the current conflict in Middle East, a text showing repulsion towards the escalation of violence that reflects on how educational systems of different countries interpret and incorporate global problems.
