Wine culture is one of the most outstanding qualities of the Mediterranean region, not only because it forms a part of its diet, its celebrations and its religion, but also because it is a good which generates economic wealth. The book talks about vine cultivation and the wine trade in Spain during Antiquity and the Middle Ages in the Mediterrenean and Western European region. There exists an inheritance of vine-producing which goes back to the Roman times. There also exists an international trade-network in which Spanish wines and raisins were the common merchandise in England, Germany, Flanders, France and even Italy.  Viticulture and oenology were born in the Middle East in the third century B.C. Thanks to Fenician and Greek traders and colonists, viticulture spread towards the West and was brought to the coasts of the Iberian Peninsula around the VII century A.D.
