The Universitat de València will analyse the work of Frank Zappa and his influence in a lecture entitled “Música y política. Frank Zappa en la actualidad” (Music and politics. Frank Zappa at present). Several experts will discuss about the validity of one of the most famous composers of the 20th century in an event aimed to defend his film and musical legacy. This debate will take place on Monday 26 January at 18:00 in La Nau Cultural Centre, and it will be attended by the composer Julián Hernández, member of the band “Siniestro Total” and one of the most known disciples of the North American composer.

This analysis lecture will start with the screening in original version with subtitles of the film Video from Hell, a documentary realised by Frank Zappa during 1980s when the composer presented his defence of freedom of speech along with musical performances against the American extreme right. When the screening comes to an end, it will take place a round-table meeting which will be attended by Julián Hernández (Siniestro Total), the composer and writer Román García and Óscar Barberá and Jenaro Talens, lecturers of the Universitat de València. This round-table meeting will be chaired by Manuel de la Fuente, lecturer of Audiovisual Communication of the Universitat de València and translator of Zappa’s autobiography.

During the round-table meeting, it will be analysed the most outstanding aspects of the film and it will be a debate about the work of this composer. Frank Zappa was one of the most important composers of the rock culture of 20th century. Between seventies and nineties, he recorded around seventy albums in which he showed different influences of contemporary music (from classic music to pop) to write a speech in direct opposition to reactionaries policies of the government of the United States. His legacy still has a large influence currently and it stays as one of the most perceptive and original composers of the 20th century.

This event is organised by the Cinema Club and the Master’s degree in Interculturalism, Communication and European Studies of the Universitat de València. Free admission until seating capacity is completed.
