Universitat de València, one of the top five Spanish universities with regard to scientific production

From 2006 to 2010, Universitat de València has been among the top five Spanish universities excelling in nine areas of scientific production. That is the data by the ISI ranking of areas and scientific fields of the Spanish universities, which brings together public and private universities and is based on their publications in international journals of the highest impact and visibility (www.rankinguniversidades.es).

According to the study’s authors –lecturers in Ganada and Navarra’s universities–, Universitat de València has proved to be among the top five universities with regard to scientific production during 2006-2010. It has achieved excellence in scientific production in nine areas: chemistry, food science and technology, genetics and evolutionary biology, biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology, medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, materials science, multidisciplinary and psychology.

Universitat de València achieved the second place in chemistry (following Universitat de Barcelona and ahead of Autónoma and Complutense de Madrid and Autònoma de Barcelona), and in food science and technology (the first place is hold by Universidad Complutense de Madrid; Universitat de València is ahead of Lleida, Politècnica de València and Sevilla universities).

Universitat de València has also achieved the third place in the genetics and evolutionary biology field (the first and second positions are hold by Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Universitat de Barcelona).

Our institution holds the fourth position in areas such as biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, medicine (ahead of Universidad de Navarra), pharmacology and toxicology, materials sciences, multidisciplinary and psychology. It is in the top five in neuroscience.

Moreover, regarding the fields’ classification, which groups great areas and journals not included in the more specific ranking of disciplines, the Universitat de València is among the top positions as well. These outstanding areas are biology sciences, medicine, pharmacy, psychology, chemistry and chemical engineering, but also areas like physics -where the UV has the second position in Spain- or engineering sciences (electronic, industrial, materials sciences and nanotechnology). Nanotechnology is the discipline which has placed our university in the fifth position nationally and in the first in the Valencian Community.

This ranking, which is in the web site of the authors http://www.rankinguniversidades.es, is also available on the academic journal El profesional de la información.
