The University Orchestra of Murcia recreates the pace of Mozart through his ‘alma mater’ at the Serenates Festival 2015

The Serenates Festival 2015 hosts the third concert framed in the SINERGIA congress, a project of the Universitat de València for the creation of a Spanish network of university orchestras. On Thursday, 22nd July, at 22:30h, the University Orchestra of Murcia will perform at the Claustrum of La Nau, under the conduction of Jorge Losana.

The Murcian ensemble will offer a concert formed, fundamentally, by music from the classicism. Divided in two parts, the programme starts with ‘The Barber of Seville’, by Giovanni Paisiello (1740 – 1816), “one of the most renowned and famous operas of the time and in which Mozart was based to write ‘The Marriage of Figaro’, explains Losana.

To Paisiello will follow the ‘Concerto for Flute in D minor, Wq. 22’, of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714 – 1788), in which intervened as a soloist David Gutiérrez (flute). “He is a musician of the University Orchestra of Murcia, which creates an union between its members and is a launching pad for them, this is why we like supporting its members and we offer them the chance to appear in the programme as soloists. David Gutiérrez finished this year his studies at the Jaén Conservatory of Music, now he has completed the cycle and we wanted him to be the soloist as a farewell with all of us”, indicates the conductor of the orchestra.

Nevertheless, the central piece of the concert will be the protagonist of the second part: the ‘Serenade Posthorn in D major K 320 (Selection)’, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791). “It has been elected because it was composed by request for the end of the academic year of the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature of the University of Salzburg. Our concert is framed in the SINERGIA project and in the Serenates Festival, so we thought this piece, which supposes a very important moment of the life of Mozart at the university, was perfec to be interpreted at the Claustrum of La Nau”, says Jorge Losana.

According to the director of the Murcian university orchestra, the programme is characteristic by the contrast between both parts. Firstly, the concert for flute with soloist, and after that, the Mozart’s Serenade. Ultimately, it will be an audacious spectacle, riddled with Sturm und Drang movements (‘storm and stress’).

On the other side, Losana, who for the first time will conduct the orchestra at the Claustrum of the historical building of the Universitat, has referred to this environment as “the ideal framework to interpret the Mozart’s Serenade outdoors”. Also, in his view, “SINERGIA is the initiative that all the Spanish university orchestras were expecting, and it is a hit the support of the Universitat de València to promote new joint activities”.

The University Orchestra of Murcia and its conductor
The University Orchestra of Murcia was created in 1996 and has been conducted by José Dolz and José Ignacio Pellicer. Since then, he has collaborated with different music entities of the Region of Murcia and has participated in several editions of the International Festival of Youth Orchestras of Murcia.

Since the year 2002, his musical conductor is Jorge Losana, who develops an activities programme around four big blocks: orchestral projects, chamber music, training activities, and concerts organisation.

Its repertoire is focused on the baroque music, the classicism, and the early romanticism. Also, he promotes the opportunity of their members of intervening in recitals and in concerts as soloists together with the orchestra. The main objective of this ensemble is to promote the pleasure for music among the university, young and child audiences, so it also organises workshops addressed to amateurs and music students. In its repertoire there is also chamber music.

His musical director, Jorge Losana, is a diploma holder in Music Education of the University of Murcia and a graduate in Chorus Direction of the Murcia Conservatory of Music, where he also began Orchestral Conducting. Nowadays, he studies the Master’s Degree in Music Research of the University of Murcia and the Master’s Degree in Performance of Early Music of the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya. He has studied in Mannheim (Germany) and has conducted the Schola Cantorum Alfoso X el Sabio, the Escolanía of the Cathedral of Murcia and the Vocal Group Cororao, among other ensembles.

Losana has also carried out record productions as a singer and a conductor for Deutsche Gramophon, Carus Verlag or Rondeau Production, and works usually as a chorus director in the participating projects that organises the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Región de Murcia.

He is chief conductor of the University Choir and the University Orchestra of Murcia.
