The UV’s Lluís Alcanyís Foundation conducts health checks to Saharawi summer hosted children

The Lluís Alcanyís Foundation of the Universitat de València participates one more year in the optometric and dental checks to Saharawi children that spend summer in the Valencian territory. A total of 310 children, from 9 to 13 years, have arrived this year at the Valencian Community, through the Associacions de Solidaritat amb el Poble Saharaui del País Valencià (FASPS-PV).

The sight of 25 children has been checked in the optometric clinic. The workers there remind us that, due to the Sahara conditions, it is common that these children have problems of dry eye and have small refractive errors and corneal problems that can be solved or minimised if caught early.

The Dentistry Clinic has also taken part in the checks. They have treated a total of 20 patients that mostly have dental caries in the temporary teeth. Moreover, they have done radiographies, dental restorations and extractions in order to treat the diseases.

The checks in both clinics have been made with the altruistic collaboration of the students of the Degree in Optics and Optometry and the Master’s Degree in Odontopediatrics.

Almost 5000 Saharawi children will spend the holidays with Spanish host families. The stays are organised by the Asociación de Amigos del Pueblo Saharaui in collaboration with the Delegación Nacional Saharaui and the Saharawi delegations in the different autonomous communities.

The solidary programme, which takes place since the 90s, makes easier for the Spanish families to host, during two months, minors who come from the Saharawi refugee camps located at Tinduf. The project ‘Vacaciones en paz’ allows the cohesion of both cultures by providing these children with holidays in Spain.
