The Battle of Sagunt 1983-1984: Social struggle and photojournalism

This initiative falls within the framework of the 40 year anniversary of the closing of the Altos Hornos del Mediterráneo (AHM).

 

The exhibition will display the images of photojournalists Ana Torralva, Jesús Ciscar, José Aleixandre, Antonio Tiedra, Pepe Encinas, Enrique Tort, Tomás Bueno, Jordi Vicent, Manuel Molines, José Vicente Rodríguez and Juan José Monzó.

Curated by journalist José Manuel Rambla and photographers Provi Morillas and José Aleixandre, The Battle of Sagunt is a visual retrospective of the 430-day struggle by AHM workers and the town of Puerto de Sagunto against the closure of the town’s steelworks This was the most important and prolonged social conflict in Spain after the end of the dictatorship. It triggered a cycle of ‘industrial restructuring’ that would characterise the nation in the 80s and 90s. The graphics and the exhibition were designed by Daniel Nebot, winner of the national design award in 1995.
