CaFeCiCo 02/07/2026: Stakeholder Perceptions of Prescribed Burning in Castell de Castells, Spain.

Increasing wildfire risk in Mediterranean landscapes has renewed interest in preventative fire management strategies such as prescribed burning. While ecological benefits are well established, social perceptions remains less understood. This study investigates stakeholder perceptions of wildfire risk and prescribed burning in Castell de Castells, Spain, through the lens of Integrated Fire Management. Sixteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with local residents and forest-associated stakeholders and analysed using Risk Perception Theory. Findings indicate differences in knowledge, trust, perceived fairness, and perceived control across stakeholder groups, alongside limited opportunities for public participation.
