The position is funded under Horizon Europe – MSCA (Project 101312530 — ReDiLEEP — HORIZON-MSCA-2025-DN-01). ReDiLEEP brings together leading universities, research institutes and non-academic partners across Europe and beyond to advance research on response diversity — the variation in how individuals, species or functional groups respond to environmental change, increasingly recognised as a key driver of ecosystem resilience — and to translate this knowledge into ecosystem management, restoration and biodiversity policy.
Research focus: Project DC8
The Doctoral Candidate will contribute to Research Project DC8, "Disruption of compensatory dynamics under extreme climatic events", investigating how climatic extremes affect the capacity of response diversity to stabilise ecosystems through compensatory dynamics within and among species. The candidate will examine how temporal and spatial asynchrony among species and individual’s changes under increasing climatic variability, and whether functional traits can predict changes in species performance, phenology and demographic responses under climatic stress.
The project combines observational, experimental and macroecological approaches: regional datasets of plant phenology and multi-year seed collections; field experiments, common-garden studies and controlled growth-chamber experiments; and global vegetation time-series data from the LOTVS initiative (https://lotvs.csic.es/), used to evaluate compensatory dynamics and community stability worldwide.
Responsabilities and training
The successful candidate will design and conduct laboratory microcosm experiments, analyse experimental and field data using state-of-the-art statistical approaches, communicate results to the developers of predictive models within ReDiLEEP, and disseminate research through publications and international conferences. The role includes planned secondments at other ReDiLEEP consortium institutes and participation in network training covering response diversity methods, data management, reproducible code, R/Tidyverse, machine learning and AI for ecologists, visualisation, evidence-based policymaking, science-policy communication and policy brief writing.
