Conference of Richard Stallman

Richard Stallman, the free software guru, will visit the Universitat de València next Tuesday 27 November at 18h. Invited by the School of Engineering of the Universitat de València (ETSE-UV) in collaboration with the Scientific Culture Unit of the Universitat de València, Open Xarxes Coop. V. and the GNU/Linux València association, he will do a lecture at the Darwin Hall of the Burjassot-Paterna Campus on “Free Software in Ethics and in Practice.”

The School of Engineering (ETSE-UV) is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the engineering studies at the university with a series of events; the conference of this activist for free software is one of them. With his particular sense of humour, he will talk about the goals and point of view of the Free Software movement and also the status of the GNU OS, which is used with Linux by dozens of millions of people all over the world, with freedom to copy it, change its source code and distribute it. Its range of use goes from domestic, daily use to institution and company use.

Dr. Richard Stallman (USA, 1953) was the pioneer of free software in 1983 and GNU/Linux development in 1984. Stallman has been awarded with a lot of prizes in the field of informatics like the ACM Grace Hopper Award, a scholarship by the MacArthur Foundation, the “Pioneer” prize of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Takeda prize for Social/Economic Improvement, as well as honorary doctor titles in almost 20 universities. He is also on the Internet’s Hall of Fame.
