Researchers from the Research Institute in Psychology of Human Resources, Organizational Development and Quality of Work Life at the Universitat de València (IDOCAL) have developed a study on the job placement of graduates from five universities in Vietnam. The study has been coordinated by professors José M. Peiró and professor Nguyen Van Thang (National Economics University -NEU, Hanoi) and professors Vicente Gonzalez-Romá and Vicente Martínez-Tur from IDOCAL-UV and professor Canh of the NEU.

The objective of the study has been to analyze the employability of university graduates in that country, in order to improve their opportunities for quality employment and strengthen the links and connections between universities and the labor market. The research has been developed within the framework of the European Erasmus + program to promote cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices.

The study, carried out from a survey carried out with a sample of 1,710 graduates during 2016, offers a systematic overview of the employment of graduates, their main characteristics and the quality of the jobs they perform. Special attention is paid to the differences by gender in the different variables studied and also to those that are detected based on the academic area of the studies carried out by the graduates. The adequacy or mismatch of the skills required by the jobs that graduates currently occupy with those they have acquired during their university studies are also analyzed in detail. Results are also provided on the characteristics of unemployed graduates (for example, job search practices, etc.) and the inactive.

The main results confirm that it is not difficult for graduates to obtain a job in the labor market, although wages do not show relevant differences in relation to those obtained by workers without higher education and it is mostly at the basic levels. Job satisfaction is generally moderate and significant turnover is observed during the first year of employment. The main source of employment is in the private sector and in foreign direct investment (FDI) companies. Among the skills most valued by graduates to achieve good performance in their work are problem solving, adaptation and continuous learning. The study offers a series of conclusions and recommendations for graduates, academic institutions, companies and educational authorities.

The results of the study have provided relevant information for the other actions of the project consisting of the development of an observatory and a career guidance service at the participating Vietnamese universities, the development of training materials for the job placement of graduates and the strengthening of the training in transversal competences of the students during their university studies.

On June 23, at an online event organized by the Ministry of Education of Vietnam, the results of the study will be officially presented to all universities in the country and the results of the project and the portal on the Promotion of Education will be delivered to the Ministry.
