About the Chair
The AVANT Chair aims to conduct research and organise teaching and dissemination activities on future strategies against depopulation. The Chair, in collaboration with the Valencian Council, proposes the design and implementation of measures to combat depopulation. These measures must be easily and effectively transferable to Valencian society, provided that the condition of guaranteeing welfare is met.
The AVANT Chair concentrates its efforts on organising seminars, conferences, lectures, competitions, exhibitions, studies and workshops in order to advance research, specialised training and the dissemination of its findings through a rigorous and systematic analysis. This approach will facilitate the provision of pertinent information to decision-makers involved in the fight against depopulation and local development in rural areas.
The ultimate objective of the Chair is to establish a space for collaboration between the various social, economic and political actors in the Valencian rural areas. This will facilitate proposals for action to address depopulation in the Valencian Community through the design, planning, management and implementation of public policies.
The AVANT Chair is coordinated from the Riu Sec campus of the Universitat Jaume I. However, the Chair is organised in four locations in order to develop its activities according to the specificities of each Valencian province and, at the same time, to better meet the demands of rural society. In addition to the coordinating headquarters of the UJI (under the direction of Vicent Budí), the province of Valencia is home to the AVANT chairs of the Universitat de València (co-directed by Jorge Hermosilla Pla and Emilio Barba Campos) and the Universitat Politècnica de València (directed by José María García Álvarez-Coque). In the province of Alicante, the AVANT Chair (directed by Antonio Martínez) is located at the University of Alacant.

In order to foster closer ties between the Cullera City Council and the Universitat de València, both institutions have established the City of Cullera Chair. The objective of this initiative is to reinforce their institutional relationships, with a particular focus on the domains of science, technology, research and knowledge transfer. The focus is on the city of Cullera, with the aim of facilitating the optimal use of the endogenous and exogenous resources of the Valencian Community to improve the quality of life of its citizens.
Local governments, as a public function that must serve the general interest of all citizens, face significant challenges that require a comprehensive understanding of their territorial reality in order to support the strategic decisions that their government officials must make.
The Cullera City Council has a long-standing collaborative relationship with the Universitat de València, particularly with the Research Group on Local and Regional Sustainability (LOCSUS) of the Inter-university Institute for Local Development. This relationship has been fostered through the joint development and implementation of various studies and projects.

About the Chair
The Demetrio Ribes UV-CHOPVT Chair is the result of an agreement signed in 2003 between the Universitat de València and the Generalitat Valenciana. The Chair aims to develop, disseminate and promote research on the history of transport, public works, civil engineering heritage and regional planning. Since 2004, the Demetrio Ribes UV-CHOPVT Chair has organised the Demetrio Ribes Research Award for unpublished research on these topics.
Demetrio Ribes Marco, born in València in 1875, was one of the most prominent architects of the early 20th century. In 1902, Ribes was employed by the Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte de España, a position he retained until his death in 1921. Notable examples of Ribes Marco’s meticulous architectural work include the Estació del Nord in València, the offices of the Príncipe Pío station in Madrid and the Barcelona–Vilanova station. Consequently, he has become a mandatory reference point when discussing the Valencian secessionist architectural movement and a protagonist of the initial steps towards rationalist architecture. The Demetrio Ribes UV-CHOPVT Chair attempts to pay homage to one of the most significant architects of the 20th century.
