  • About the Chair

The Chair for Housing and the Right to the City was established in 2021 as a result of a collaboration agreement between the Universitat de València and the Generalitat Valenciana.

Decent housing is a human right inseparable from values such as dignity, equality, inclusion, well-being, personal security and public participation. It is broadly defined as the right to live in a home in peace, security and dignity. In addition, the right to housing involves an analysis of cities and city life. Therefore, it is essential to examine the right to the city and to develop a new paradigm of habitability that links housing with neighbourhoods, cities and the environment.

This implies, in particular, the study of fair ways of distributing the benefits and responsibilities resulting from the urbanisation process, the fulfilment of the social function of cities and properties, the democratisation of access to housing and public services and the distribution of urban income, with special attention to the groups with fewer economic resources and in situations of vulnerability.

  • Chair activities

With the aim of contributing to combating the threats that impede citizens’ access to housing and the guarantee of the right to a decent home, city and life, as well as to the formulation of proposals in this sense, the Chair develops the following lines of action:

    Academic research

The Chair conducts various research projects and initiatives (both independent and collaborative) with the objective of generating new knowledge, debate and practices aimed at ensuring the right to housing and the construction of more just and liveable cities. The Chair’s research encompasses a number of key areas, including: accessibility and housing rights, gender, housing and feminist cities, urban planning, regional planning and social justice, globalisation and city transformation, poverty and inequality, mobility, eco-social transitions in urban spaces, urban conflicts and social movements in 21st-century cities, architecture and sustainability, etc.

    Publications

The Chair publishes articles on its blog periodically, as well as reports and studies on different subjects related to the Chair that may contribute to the adoption of new public policies or innovative social initiatives, as well as the adaptation of existing ones to current needs. In addition, the Chair collaborates with esteemed publishing houses to disseminate the findings of its researchers in the form of books. It also publishes translations of foreign language works that facilitate the introduction of thought-provoking ideas and proposals within our context.

    Training

The Chair designs and delivers specialised postgraduate courses on housing and the right to the city for the training of students, researchers, public administration staff and the general public.

    Activities and networking

The Chair organises and participates in seminars, workshops, conferences and congresses, which provide a forum for debate and discussion on the themes and proposals that it is currently working on. These events also facilitate the establishment of networks of collaboration with other research centres, entities, public and private institutions and social movements in defence of the right to decent housing and cities. The objective of these networks is to leverage positive synergies for the development of the Chair’s objectives.

  • About the Chair

The Minsait-UV Chair for LegalTech and Artificial Intelligence provides support to the UV LegalTech Lab, a teaching and research unit of the Faculty of Law dedicated to the promotion of knowledge about technology applied to law in its various facets. The Chair’s approach is pragmatic and its methodology is empirical, based on the use and analysis of the tools provided by the market to facilitate the exercise of legal professions, as well as the creation or development of tools (apps, virtual assistants, expert systems, etc.) using low-code programming languages. In addition, the Faculty of Law and the LegalTech Lab will launch a UV-specific degree next academic year, supported by the Chair, the Master’s Degree of Lifelong Learning in LegalTech & Compliance Offer.

The term legal tech is used to describe the incorporation of technology in the legal environment, i.e. the use of technology in the practice of law. Currently, this is one of the areas of greatest interest for law firms and legal operators in general. Legal tech involves a diverse array of tools, which can be broadly categorised into three principal groups. The first group encompasses enabling technologies, such as cloud storage and cybersecurity, which facilitate the preservation and remote access to information. The second group encompasses support tools, which are designed to enhance the internal management processes of law firms and organisations. The third group encompasses legal advice tools, which facilitate a more efficient provision of legal services.
