ABSTRACT:
One critical issue in ethology is the limited amount of data that can be collected in the wild using traditional manual data collection methods. Manually recording animal behavior is a laborious task and does not provide sufficient data at a detailed level to answer important biological questions on collective animal behavior. However, with advancements in remote sensing technologies such as satellite and drone monitoring, it is now possible to collect extensive datasets and automate classification using machine learning. Dr. Isla Duporge will describe her approach to achieving this for terrestrial mammals and discuss the difficulties involved in using this method for marine mammal monitoring.
