In Finland, reading difficulties (RD) screening is used to identify the support needs of students entering upper secondary education. To support this, DigiLukiseula - a digital dyslexia screening tool for young people and adults - was developed in 2019. DigiLukiseula has been found to be valid and reliable, but the accuracy of identification has not been sufficiently evaluated. This study aims to determine how DigiLukiseula identifies students (n = 73) who are identified as having RD in more detailed individual assessments. Preliminary results showed that up to 78% of students identified as having RD on the screener were confirmed as having RD on the individual assessment.
Bio
I have started as a PhD researcher in university of Jyväskylä in August 2024. I’m a special needs teacher and I work general upper secondary school in Jyväskylä. I have also previously worked as a researcher at the Niilo Mäki Institute (see more https://en.nmi.fi/). There I have worked as a project leader in DigiLukiseula project to develop a digital dyslexia screening tool for young people and adults. In my dissertation I partly use data from the DigiLukiseula. DigiLukiseula is widely used in secondary education and by this year around 170,000 secondary school students will have completed it.
