Advances in the development of innovative biopesticides for the control of phytopathogenic fungi (BIOFUNGATE Project)

This project aims to develop an agricultural bioprotection product based on an encapsulation system of active compounds with toxicological and biocidal properties against plant pathogens. In addition, it is a project in collaboration with the UPV-IAM centre and the company IDAI NATURE.

BIOFUNGATE is a project co-financed by the Agència Valenciana de la Innovació (AVI) through the 2022 Strategic Cooperation Projects program. Project likely to be co-financed by the European Union through the FEDER Operational Program of the Valencian Community 2021-2027.

This project aims to develop an agricultural bioprotection product based on an encapsulation system of active compounds with toxicological and biocidal properties against plant pathogens. In addition, it is a project in collaboration with the UPV-IAM centre and the company IDAI NATURE.

One of the most significant milestones of the project has been the successful encapsulation of essential oils in two of the materials prepared by IDAI NATURE, which are based on silica mesoporase microparticles. This process will allow the active compounds to be released in a controlled manner, maximising their effectiveness against phytopathogenic fungi without damaging the environment or the cultivated plants.

In addition, during the first year of the project, the potential of these natural antimicrobials was evaluated through preliminary confrontation tests in Petri dishes. These studies revealed the effect of antimicrobials on the germination of spores of two phytopathogenic fungi: Alternaria solani and Botrytis cinerea.

This project not only contributes to the sustainability of crops, but also reinforces the importance of research into natural biopesticides as an alternative to conventional chemicals.
