The project presented by the research group leaded by Dr. Maquieira at IDM has been one out of 41 projects selected by the Generalitat Valenciana for application in the fight against coronavirus, as announced today by the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig and the Minister for Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society, Carolina Pascual.
This project proposes the use of two biosensor systems for the detection of SARS-CoV-2. The first of the systems is capable of processing up to six different samples at once. It is based on the use of compact disk technologies and would help determine levels of virus in blood at the same time as the levels of specific immunoglobulins IgGs and IgMs. The second is based on quartz crystal microbalance capable of measuring changes in viscoelasticity.
The almost 300 projects presented have been evaluated by a group of experts external to the Valencian Community, among which are specialists in immunology, epidemiology, pulmonology and biotechnology, from Vall d'Hebron, Barcelona Clinic hospitals, 12 de Octubre de Madrid, Ramón y Cajal and Instituto de Salud Carlos III. To this group we must add specialists in biostatistics, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering and specialists in Artificial Intelligence, belonging to the Carlos III University, Pompeu Fabra University, Complutense University of Madrid and University of Cantabria. And finally, a group of specialists from the Spanish Association of Health Material and Technology Evaluators
